When pictures of Rihanna came out on the Internet showing her beautiful face tattered and bruised because the fist of boyfriend Chris Brown struck her in a violent attack, it left most of us in disbelief and shock - that yes, even the young and fabulous in Hollywood struggle with the same issues we deal with or talk about on a daily basis in our most intimate relationships.

Yes, romantic relationships can be wonderful with the right person but as Dr. Andrea states, “A relationship with the wrong person can wreak havoc on a person’s life leading to years of heartache, emotional/social unrest, and even physical damage. This is an important show for every woman to learn the signs to watch for and to understand what goes through the mind of an abuser.”

· It is estimated that 2 million to 4 million US women are assaulted by a domestic partner every year. Twelve million women (1 out of 4 women) will be abused in their lifetime.

· One study estimated that more than 3% (approximately 1.8 million) of women were severely assaulted by male partners or cohabitants over the course of a year, while others indicate the percentage of women experiencing dating violence, including sexual assault, physical violence, or verbal and emotional abuse, ranges as high as 65%

On Monday, July 13th at 1pm ET, Dr. Andrea will be discussing the 13 deadly relationship mistakes most smart women make in their quest to find a lifelong partner. Dr. Andrea will be joined live by Kimberly, a woman who was abused in her first marriage of three years although the warning signs were blaring when she and her ex were only dating. Also live on the show is a man, “SP”, a former abuser, who will talk about why he found himself committing violence against women in his relationships.

Then, Dr. Andrea will be joined by singer/songwriter, Meritxell, the new ‘Peaches’ of Peaches and Herb. Meritxell, who hails from Barcelona, Spain, has teamed up with Dr. Andrea to bring the I Love You, Me! Women’s Empowerment Project to those who need a new start in life. Meritxell will share insights on how domestic violence affects the Latina community.

This timely and relevant show is not to be missed!

Healthy is the New “Skinny!”

June 28th, 2009

If Barbie Were a Real Woman, She Would Look Like the Rest of Us!

Tune in for “Healthy is the New Skinny” on the “Dr. Andrea Show” as she Discuss the Obsession of Body Perfection in America

If Barbie were a real woman she would have: divorced Ken, had 1-tummy tuck under her belt, endured 2 lay-offs, suffered with thinning hair, turned off the lights while making love and probably been treated for her depression! Come on people let’s get real; Barbie would look and feel like most of us!

Forty to fifty percent of women in the U.S. are under pressure to measure up to a certain social and cultural ideal of beauty, which can lead to poor body image. Women are constantly bombarded with “Barbie-doll” images.

If you fear the words “Pool Party”, let Dr. Andrea walk you through it! Got a class or family reunion coming up? Allow Dr. Andrea to boost your confidence! Is your daughter obsessed about being SKINNY? Dr. Andrea can coach her through it! Or do you just desire to feel good about YOU? Don’t miss this show!

· It is estimated that 40-50% of American women are trying to lose weight at any point in time.

· One out of every four college aged women has an eating disorder.

· Almost half of all women smokers smoke because they see it as the best way to control their weight. Of these women, 25% will die of a disease caused by smoking.

· At 59” tall and weighing 110 lbs, Barbie would have a BMI of 16.24 which is considered severely underweight. Because of her ridiculous proportions (39” bust, 18” waist, 33” thighs and a size 3 shoes!), if she was a real woman, she wouldn’t be able to walk upright - she would have to walk on all fours.

· At age thirteen, 53% of American girls are “unhappy with their bodies.” This grows to 78% by the time girls reach seventeen.

By presenting an ideal that is so difficult to achieve and maintain, the cosmetic and diet product industries are experiencing exponential growth. It’s no accident that our daughters, nieces and BFF’s are increasingly brainwashed into thinking that thinness is the essential criterion of beauty. The message we’re hearing is either “all women need to lose weight” or that the natural aging process is a “disastrous” fate.

The next live show, scheduled June 29th at 1pm ET, will feature a discussion titled, “Healthy is the New Skinny”! Dr. Andrea says, “The media has it all wrong and it’s got us all trippin’! The average American woman is 5’4” tall and weighs 140 pounds. The average American model is 5’11” tall and weighs 117 pounds.”

Dr. Andrea will be joined by Blanche Williams, former model, Sirius-XM Radio talk show personality, author, media literacy advocate, and management director for acclaimed documentary The Soul’s of Black Girls, focusing on the impact the media has on black women’s self-image.  Blanche has been involved with health, wellness and empowerment for over 10 years and believes that a healthy mind creates a healthy body.  Her book, How to Design Your Mind for Greatness, is part of Williams’ Greatness by Design Empowerment Enterprises.  www.greatnessbydesign.com

Also joining the conversation is Andrea Owen. She is a life coach, blogger of “Live your Ideal Life“, and a speaker passionate about empowering women to value their character and access their 3 best selves: self-worth, self-confidence and self-esteem.

Dr. Pennington will answer pertinent questions that include:

  1. What is “Total Life Transformation” all about for real women with real weight issues?
  2. Why do some of us hate the way we look?
  3. How can we boost our metabolism to increase weight loss?
  4. How can women come to love the bodies we have on the inside?
  5. What are ways to reduce the weight after the baby comes?
  6. How can we boost the esteem of our teens and prevent poor choices?

Airing weekly, Empowered for Life! with Dr. Andrea on BlogTalkRadio and YouTube will discuss timely and relevant topics including wellbeing, weight loss and body image, eating disorders, and health empowerment. Practical Spirituality: Bringing presence and passion to who you are and what you do

June 5th, 2009

What does passion mean to you? What images or actions come to mind as you hear the word passion?

For me passion is tied to spirit. It embodies a soul-invested energy, enthusiasm and intention. I remember a time in life when I directed my whole energy at activities but felt no passion. That is, I didn’t feel an uplifted, inspired presence behind the activity. So after recurring bouts of depression I decided the pain of living without passion was too much to bear. So, following my own intuition and the proven tenets of Positive Psychology, I decided to align my passion for creative self-expression with my soul’s desire to assist in the evolution of humanity.

I realize that my unconventional path is not for everyone but it is one that brings me enormous peace and a sense of fulfillment. I recognize that passion for a cause or a belief can also lead to quieter, more internal processes = such as the passion we feel toward our families, life partners, animals and the planet.

I find that a quiet, enduring passion for love, truth, compassion, peace and harmony can fuel even simple activities like folding laundry or reading the same bedtime story to a child – for the 50th time!

Can you find ways of bringing passion to the surface of your consciousness so that you experience it behind your actions and interactions with others?

Self love and over coming the stigma of a label

May 2nd, 2009

What is a label?

Fat, large boned, chubby, plus sized, obese, chunky, are any of these words familiar to you? These are labels and categories society has put on women who do not match the “ideal” classification of a healthy a female. They are mean, malicious and if you let them will cause depression, anxiety, low self esteem and reclusion.

Unfortunately these labels are not going to go away. Mean spirited, low self-esteemed people who gain energy by name calling and those that cannot see past one’s physical appearance are not going away either. If you have been a victim of society’s classifications and treated differently due to them you have a choice, you can accept them or you can over come them.

How to over come a label with Self Love

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting a plus-sized lady at a social function. She entered the room and immediately everyone took notice. You may think the first thing they saw was her size, you could not be more wrong. What they saw was a well-dressed woman, one that had a smile that lit up the whole room, and moved with a sense of self confidence that could be accomplished with some one who was comfortable in their own skin. This was a woman who had a huge degree of self love. She knew she was over weight, but she did not allow it to handicap her. She accepted herself for who she was, she loved herself for your inner beauty, she loved her sense of humor, she loved herself for having the courage to say “I am just fine the way I am.”

She wasn’t hiding from the fact that her weight was a ‘problem’.  In fact she shared her successes with me - she has lost nearly 80 pounds in a little less than one year. So, while she realizes that her body size is not good for her heart or kidneys, etc. She is not letting it define her sense of self.

The point I want to make is that you don’t have to be a victim, you have the power to overcome this obstacle and you owe it to yourself not to allow these labels to get the better of you. You can overcome this label and classification with Self Love.

What is Self Love

Self-love, in my opinion, encompasses an attitude and lifestyle that supports one’s life in all aspects. What I mean is that, when we love ourselves we carry a certain mental attitude and outward behavior that is independent of the opinions of others. With self-love we can take care of ourselves because we matter, we are worth happiness and good health and success.

Self-love is different from self-esteem in a variety of ways. While self-love is often built upon healthy self-esteem it is beyond just feeling good about one’s value or confident in one’s ability. Self-love is not tied to external measures of success or competency. Self-love implies that one accepts oneself – flaws and all. And self-love, in its highest form, allows one to celebrate the wonders of this thing called life – no matter how good or bad the circumstances.

Take the first steps today. Accept yourself for who you are and begin to heal.
